El charrán mínimo es una ave marina que migra desde Centroamérica hasta Norteamérica para reproducirse. Debido a que esta ave anida sobre el suelo y a que sus huevos se mimetizan con el mismo, es muy fácil que las personas los pisen o que pasen vehículos sobre ellos. Es por esto que desde el año 2019 Pro Esteros A.C y Jardín Botánico San Quintín, iniciaron un programa de conservación del Charran mínimo en la región de San Quintín. Las actividades de este programa de conservación incluyen el monitoreo científico de los nidos y pollos en las colonias de Punta Azufre y Laguna Figueroa, con el objetivo de conocer el éxito reproductivo de dicha especie. La instalación de un cerco temporal en la zona de anidación de Punta Azufre durante la temporada reproductiva también se lleva acabo para la protección de esta especie.
